The speech delivered by then-Prime Minister Sir John Kothalwala at the 1955 Bandung Conference became a controversial issue around the world. Indian Prime Minister during the time Neru expected despite China being a communist country to get them engaged as a Fellow Asian country.
Sir John expressed that Bandung conference should raise up against the western imperialism and the rising communist empire; this shattered what Neru was expecting.
Indian PM Jawaharlal Nehru Playing the Big Brother, Questioned Sir John, ‘Lionel why didn’t you show your speech to me before?,’ Only for Sir John to hit back ‘Why should I Nehru? Did you show me yours before you make it?
The story became famous all over the world and Sir John was the Bandung hero. But the Sri Lankan opposition called him Bandung Donkey. There was also a rumour that the father of current President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who was Sir John’s adviser, wrote that speech to Sir John. Ranil’s father Esmond Wickramasinghe was a political committee member of the left-wing Sama Samaj Party. After his marriage to pro U.N.P. Lake house owner’s D. R. Wijayawardene’s daughter, he abandoned left-wing politics and embraced western capitalist politics. His son Ranil Wickramasinghe is also a friend of Western capitalist countries.
But when he became the president and recently went to the Nikkei conference in Japan, he said that if the question arises as to which country he would choose between the two countries, America and China, he would choose Asia and he bets for China – inclusive Asia led economy. He also highly praised China’s Belt and Road Initiative. But when Ranil was in the opposition, he said that one of the main Chinese projects in Sri Lanka, the port city of Colombo, was a Chinese colony.
‘I have heard this being said about a Chinese colony. But what it can be is an area which will have more power than the area that Prabhakaran ran during the war…’

The question is why Ranil sees the good side of Chinese projects after becoming the President. Ranil told this story in Japan. This was Ranil’s second visit to Japan. Before the first visit, Economynext had mentioned the following.
‘Political analysts and sources close to him have said Wickramasinhe has been navigating the foreign policy carefully to ensure not to be caught in Indian – China geopolitics. He sees Japan as a long term development partner for Sri Lanka. A government official who is closely working with wickramasinghe on the reforms and debt restructuring said asking not to be named. ‘We are on our knees’ after the economic crisis and we may be compelled to give away some demands by China and India. If they want to use our crisis for their own benefit. Japan could be a better Choice to facilitate the debt restructuring talks….’
